What is HDTV?
The large-scale shift from analog delivery of TV signals to digital delivery of television began little more than a decade ago. DISH Network satellite TV is all-digital, and always has been. But the future of TV is high-definition, the most advanced form of digital television.

Technically, there are two major differences between HDTV and standard digital definition television -- aspect ratio and resolution.

Aspect ratio is the width and height of a video image. HDTV uses a widescreen 16:9 aspect ratio as compared to the standard 4:3 ratio. The effect is a wider, deper image easier seen by the human eye.

Resolution is the main reason HDTV looks so much better than standard TV. Standard-definition resolution is 480p, while high-definition television comes in three different resolutions: 720p, 1080i and 1080p. 720p often delivers a smoother, sharper image. 1080i has more lines and pixels than 720p. 1080p (commonly referred to as "full HD") offers the benefits of both but is not yet used widely in production of HDTV programs
